Car carrier Makassar Highway aground on West coast of Sweden

The 17,700 gt car carrier Makassar Highway which ran aground on the East Coast of Sweden on Monday 23 July began leaking oil on Sunday after heavy weather re-floated the vessel.

An estimated 14 tonnes of heavy fuel oil has leaked. Efforts have so far recovered ca. 7 tonnes however some has already reached the Swedish Coastline. Salvors are preparing to lighten the vessel by emptying lower fuel tanks before towing her to Oskarshamn. According to the crew, the vessel was carrying 333,000 liters of fuel oil, 38,000 liters of lubricating oil and 34,000 liters of diesel.
